British designer wins LVMH prize

Grace Wales Bonner, a graduate of the renowned Central Saint Martins institute, has been named as the winner of the 2016 LVMH Prize, beating seven other young fashion designers to the honour. Ms Wales Bonner, whose menswear collection was shown at the recent London Collections Men, receives a year-long mentorship at LVMH and €300,000 prize money.

She was selected by a panel of industry figures that included Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs, Phoebe Philo and Nicolas Ghesquière. The award was presented by actress Lea Seydoux during a ceremony at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris.

The other finalists in the competition were Tuomas Merikoski, Matthew Williams, Hiromichi Hiromichi Ochiai, Christelle Kocher, Vejas Kruszewski, Glenn Martens and Brandon Maxwell. Mr Kruszewski, the youngest designer to ever ne nominated for the Prize, was awarded a special prize and will receive a 12-month mentorship at LVMH as well as a grant of €150,000.

The LVMH Prize was first awarded in 2014 and the first two recipients, Thomas Tait and Marques Almeida, were also London-based designers and graduates of Central Saint Martins.
