Morocco’s leather industry has received a big boost with the announcement of three government-backed projects which aim to create 35,000 jobs by 2020.

In 2014, the sector achieved a turnover of 4.7 billion dirhams ($480 million); by 2020, the ministry wants to this to reach 12.2 billion dirhams ($1.3 billion), including $560 million in exports.

The projects will be centred around leather shoes, leathergoods and leather garment production and have already attracted private sector investment.

"The sector has not had much luck,” said Minister of Industry Moulay Hafid Elalamy to local press, but added that now was the time for that luck to change.
