Artisan production makes progress in Morocco

Morocco’s leathergoods craftsmen and women contributed to overall growth of the North African country’s artisan goods sector in the first half of 2014.

In the first six months of this year, Moroccan artisans achieved an increase in export revenues of 18.4% compared to the same period in 2013, with leathergoods registering a contribution of more than 7% of the sector’s total. The figures come from Maison de l’Artisan, an agency set up to promote handmade products from Moroccan artisans.

Maison de l’Artisan said the whole sector, including clothing, products made from wood, pottery and jewellery as well as leathergoods turned over more than $2.25 billion last year, but most of this came from sales, to tourists and locals, in the domestic market.
