Representatives of the artisan manufacturing sector in Fès in Morocco visited Santa Croce sull’Arno at the start of November to examine ways in which the North African city can emulate the way leather production works in the Tuscan tanning cluster.

During the visit, the Moroccan delegation spent time with representatives of the Santa Croce tanners’ association and toured two tanneries, Lo Stivale and Victoria, as well as visiting the district’s effluent treatment plant.

Afterwards, Naji Fakari, president of the Fès artisans’ association, said that the delegation felt Santa Croce was the ideal model for the Moroccan city to follow in attempting to renew its artisan leather production set-up.

Abderrahim Iben Khayat Zougari, who leads a regional government initiative to promote artisan manufacturing, said the delegation had been struck by how well traditional craftsmanship skills combine with advanced technology in Santa Croce, and by the professionalism of the people working there.
