Moroccan export recovery let down by leather and textiles

20/10/2015
Amid general improvement in Morocco’s export performance in the first nine months of 2015, figures for leather, which the government reports together with statistics for the textile industry, are a disappointment.

In the period from January to September 2015, Morocco brought in $16 billion in export revenues, an increase of 6.2% compared to the same period last year. Among the strongest sectors were phosphates, the automotive industry and agrifood.

However, the statistics show a decline for export earnings from leather and textiles, with these industries bringing in 2.1% less in the first nine months of this year compared to the same period in 2014. This year, the leather and textile industries brought in just over $2.5 billion in export revenues in the first three quarters.
