Tanners and other representatives of the leather industry travelled from Morocco to take part in a special economic forum in Abidjan from December 14-16, aimed at strengthening ties between the North African country and the Ivory Coast.

Moroccan leather industry association FEDIC gave support to export promotions agency Maroc Export in setting up the event.

FEDIC said it has a strong interest in helping the Ivorian leather industry advance. It said the leather industry there is confined to around 5,000 artisan producers of finished product, who have a combined turnover valued at just over €7.5 million per year.

However, the Moroccan association also said it was impressed by five modern tanneries recently set up in the Ivory Coast, although these are producing only semi-finished leather.
