Australian government rules out suspending cattle trade with Vietnam

After calls from the RSPCA and some industry figures to halt live cattle exports from Australian to Vietnam, the government has ruled out the suspension.

Australian exporters last week called a meeting with clients in Vietnam to discuss conditions in abattoirs, according to reports.

"The necessary actions are being taken to ensure the Australian livestock we export to Vietnam stay where they are meant to stay, are treated appropriately and with humane care," said Alison Penfold of the Australian Livestock Exporters Council.

A ban to Indonesia in 2011 cost cattle farmers dearly. Last October, a group made up of Australian cattle farmers and the wider industry launched a class action lawsuit against the government for that decision.

"We want to make sure, as we work in South East Asia, that we don't have the sort of knee-jerk reactions we've had in the past, such as Indonesia, which cost us immensely," said Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce.
