Indonesia and Australia sign cattle trade pact
Representatives from Australia and Indonesia signed a joint declaration confirming the governments’ commitment to the Indonesia-Australia Partnership on Food Security.

The partnership aims to improve the productivity, sustainability and competitiveness of the red meat and cattle sector.

John Ackerman, Indonesia manager for Meat and Livestock Australia, which helped to draw up the declaration, said it will be important to establish a forum to rebuild relationships, reduce uncertainties and provide a setting to investigate mutual opportunities.

“This partnership brings together knowledge and expertise from both countries, to further develop a stronger relationship that provides opportunities to transfer skills, and work together, to build the industries in both countries,” he said.

“With investment in the market, from genetics through to processing advancements, MLA will continue to assist enhancing relationships between the two countries into the next decade and we will continue to support the partnership to help assist in fulfilling the food requirements of Indonesia.”

The Australian government has committed A$60 million to the partnership over 10 years. Indonesia is one of Australia’s major trading partners for meat and livestock, worth more than A$500 million in 2013.
