Steady decline for Australia’s leathergoods industry

24/06/2014
Australia’s revenue from its leathergoods and leather substitute product manufacturing industries has declined 4% per year between 2009 and 2014, according to data agency IBISWorld.

Its 519 businesses bring in an annual A$542 million, and employ about 2,370, it said.

It attributed the decline to falling consumer spending, leading to lower demand from footwear and clothing manufacturers. Companies have also been affected the strength of the Australian dollar.

Packers and skin traders export the majority of Australia's animal hides and skins to China, while a large number of finished leather products such as belts, wallets and handbags are also imported from the Asian country.
