Australia: Tannery closures create problems for manufacturers

Craig Bates told ABC Media that he still buys kangaroo leather from Australia but gets most of his bag and upholstery leather from the neighbouring country.
'We buy Australian leather while we can get it, but no one is doing upholstery leather in Australia. There's not enough manufacturing to keep tanneries going,“ he said. “A lot of the cow hides now are being pickled here and tanned off shore."
His business had to diversify after losing a shoe contract but has seen improved international sales after the launch of a website.
