Australia’s agriculture minister, Barnaby Joyce, has announced an agreement over “health protocols” for livestock shipped from the country to Iran. Mr Joyce said on making the announcement that the agreement with Iran over how Australian-reared animals are to be treated “gives the livestock-exports industry the green light to begin trade with Iran”.

The develop signals the end to a ban on exports of cattle, sheep and goats from Australia to Iran that has lasted 30 years. This ban, which was the result of political differences between the two countries, came at a time when Iran was the biggest export market for Australian sheep.

Mr Joyce said he believed Australian livestock farmers could see demand for as many as 1.3 million head of sheep per year in the Iranian market. “This is great news for our sheep, cattle and goat farmers,” he said. “It’s over to industry to take the lead with this and begin setting up systems to send Australian livestock to Iran.”
