Indonesia to import extra live cattle
22/07/2013
A proposal from trade minister, Gita Wirjawan, suggests a parity price for beef in the Indonesian market. Prices going 15% or more above that parity price would automatically trigger permission for suppliers in other countries to export beef or live cattle to Indonesia.
The government in Djakarta said last year that it wanted to be self-sufficient in beef by 2014 and it immediately began to impose stricter controls on the volumes of beef and cattle coming into the country from overseas. But demand for beef is high and prices of locally produced meat have risen quickly.
As a result, extra imports of live cattle will begin immediately, with farmers in Australia saying they expect a boost to exports of live cattle from there to Indonesia by around 25,000 head over the next three months.
