Australia attempts to build bridges with Indonesia following cattle ban

10/05/2013
Australian agriculture ministers are travelling to Indonesia this weekend to try to repair trade relations.

The South East Asian nation previously imported around 700,000 cattle annually from Australia, but this has fallen to around 270,000, according to local press.

Cattle farmers blame their government’s decision, in 2011, to impose a ban on exporting to the country, following reports of suspected inhumane treatment of the animals at slaughter houses.

However, Australian cattle prices have hit lows, due to the soured trade relations, a high dollar and a severe drought. Cattle farmers have suggested offering 100,000 free cattle to Indonesia as a gesture of goodwill.
