Australian government praises live export progress

A report by the Australian government says the cattle industry has improved the welfare of exported livestock since the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS) was introduced in 2011.

Howard Smith, president of the Cattle Council of Australia, said more stringent animal welfare requirements have benefitted Australian cattle producers, particularly over the last two years.

He said: “The initial implementation of ESCAS, in reaction to appalling animal handling of cattle in Indonesia, seemed tough, but when you look at the overwhelming improvements of conditions for Australian cattle in market, it was a necessary step.

“Industry is seeking continual improvement under ESCAS and sees it as the responsibility of all people in the livestock export supply chain to work diligently to improve animal welfare outcomes globally.”
