Australian cattle industry sues government over export ban

A group made up of Australian cattle farmers and the wider industry has launched a class action lawsuit against the government for its decision to halt live exports to Indonesia in 2011.

The ban was imposed after a video emerged of Australian cows being whipped in an Indonesian abattoir.

However, the farmers say the reaction was extreme and led to potentially millions of dollars of lost revenues as Indonesia was formerly one of its biggest customers. Although the ban was lifted after a month, it strained trade relations, and Indonesia has since sought to become more self-sufficient.

Australian press have reported that claims from the Consolidated Pastoral Company and Australian Agricultural Company are likely to exceed $180 million, and hundreds of other businesses are expected to join the action.

Prime Minister Tony Abbot said this week that the ban was the worst decision the labour government made.
