Coach takes ‘crafted to last’ concept to Tokyo
US leathergoods brand Coach, based in New York City, has popped up at Isetan Shinjuku department store in the Japanese capital, marking the first time the label has taken its sustainability-minded “crafted to last” initiative on the road.

Alive with fresh floral bouquets, the boutique’s interiors were inspired by the tapestry of florists which line the streets of Coach’s home city, according to the company. Shoppers who spend more than ¥60,000 (roughly $470) inside the store will consequently receive a gift of locally sourced flowers.

Limited editions including the Rogue handbag in “original natural leather”, a veg-tanned leather treated with natural dyes and finished with an organic wax, are available inside, in addition to a selection of upwoven leather bags created from scraps recovered from the brand’s own factories.

Articles featuring artisanal floral printing techniques, in which naturally dyed flowers are pressed onto the leather, are also presented for purchase. More bags and small leathergoods have been handstitched with meaningful words and limited-edition, locally auspicious motifs in colourful recycled thread. Clients who buy from the pop-up have the opportunity to further decorate their purchases with embroidery at a dedicated on-site station.

Website copy describing Coach’s “crafted to last” philosophy ties its sustainability commitments to the idea of a “better-made future”, involving designs it intends “to be worn, loved and handed down - to last for many years”.
