Japanese company revives deer and boar leather
A Japanese company has revived the art of creating leather from deer and boar, which are indigenous to Japan and whose skins have been used in the country since ancient times, according to the company.
Origin Leather Japan said it has been working on the process for years, as it took a long time to stabilise the leathers.
The company said some retailers and manufacturers initially did not want to work with the leather because of the natural scratches. “As we live, we also get scars, but these scars are a sign of life and a sign of natural materials,” it said. “We believe that Japanese people should be proud of leather, which is deeply related to the history of Japan.
“We found value in discarded skins, managed the process from capture to shipment of skins with traceability, and researched how to use the new material."
It added that over the past 10 years it has secured a stable supply of the skins with full quality control.
The company will be exhibiting at Premiere Vision in Paris (February 8 to 10).
