China: leather footwear exports continue to decline
Citing China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) data, Chinese media have reported a “significant” decline in local leather footwear production, which dropped to around 3.2 billion pairs between January and November 2020, reportedly owing to the negative effects of covid-19 on business.
This represented a year-on-year decrease of 18.7%.
A decline in leather footwear manufacturing output was also logged in 2018, when the industry noted a year-on-year decrease of almost 19% at that time. The number of leather shoes made in China was then roughly 3.6 billion pairs.
Between 2013 and 2019, leather footwear production fluctuated and declined, local media said, with the Chinese price index for leather apparently contracting to 75.43 points at one stage during the end of August 2020.
Reports suggest that the current national leather footwear exports environment is “relatively sluggish”, noting the rise of leather footwear manufacturing in India and Brazil.
Chinese media expects the local leather footwear industry to shrink to 1.7 billion pairs by 2026.
