West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has laid the foundation stone for an extension of Calcutta Leather Complex, saying she expects 500,000 jobs to be created at the site in the “near future”.

Local press reported the aim is to develop the one of the largest integrated leather sites in Asia, housing 187 new tanneries, and another 250 “in the pipeline”. This would take the total number of tanneries at the site to almost 800.

The complex, called Karmadiganta, will also house eight common effluent treatment plants, and new footwear manufacturing park, according to reports.
