Tamil Nadu tanners withstand water crisis
25/06/2019
Lower-than-average rainfall in 2018 and in the first half of 2019 have left reservoirs depleted and local reports have said that the state’s biggest city, Chennai, which has a requirement for 800 million litres of water per day, was able to supply only 525 million litres per day towards the end of June.
However, tanners in leather clusters in Tamil Nadu have told local media that recent innovations in their production processes have helped them continue making leather in spite of the crisis. Tanners said innovations that India’s Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) introduced at the start of this decade to help the leather industry to achieve zero liquid discharge have enabled them to make savings of up to 80% in the volumes of water they consume.
