Kanpur tanners may relocate due to hide shortage

Tanners based in and around Kanpur in northern India are considering relocating part or all of their operations to West Bengal due to the shortage of raw material in Uttar Pradesh, according to local media reports.

"Some 20 or 25 tanneries have shown interest to open their units here because of the problem to get raw materials in Uttar Pradesh. They are looking for land or taking over existing units," said Ramesh Juneja, president of the Calcutta Leather Complex Tanners Association.

Calcutta is the capital of the state of West Bengal.

The raw material shortage is the result of the actions of the new chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, a politician and Hindu priest. Following his election, he immediately moved to close down a number of abattoirs, leaving tanners in and around Kanpur short of hides. They report having already notice an effect on the supply of hides and skins.

Mr Juneja said the Calcutta Leather Complex currently houses around 350 tanners and leather processors. He revealed that it cannot offer space for new units due to constraints in effluent treatment capacity, but said that the state government has proposed the building of two new treatment plants, which would allow for an additional 250 units to set up in the complex.
