Indian tanners could turn to US for hides

The president of the Calcutta Leather Complex Tanners Association, Ramesh Juneja, has told Indian media that the country’s tanners could start importing hides from the US after the government approved stringent new rules for cattle slaughter.

One of the most significant changes is that farmers will now only be able to sell animals at livestock markets if they sell to another farmer for use in agriculture. These markets will no longer be permitted to sell animals for slaughter. Traders and meat companies will still be able to buy animals for slaughter, but they must buy them at the farm.

Mr Juneja said Indian companies will be forced to turn to the US if buffalo are not excluded from the new regulations as they account for the majority of leather demand. He revealed that West Bengal’s hide stock should last another two months.

He also said that major international fashion brands have already expressed concern over the situation and have sought reassurances that their requirements will continue to be met.
