Four injured in “illegal” factory fire
A leather-cutting unit on the first floor of a residential building in the Tiljala district of Calcutta that the authorities have described as illegal caught fire June 15. Six workers were sleeping in the facility, four of whom suffered injury.
The blaze broke out around three o’clock in the morning, but other residents of the building raised the alarm, preventing further injuries
One resident said there was a blast, which woke him up, allowing him to alert the emergency services. But he added that the leather factory workers were unable to get out because a gate at the entrance to the facility was locked. He and some other residents of the building broke down the door to help the workers escape.
Local media said the city authorities may take action against the owners of the factory because they had no fire-fighting equipment in place. The unit has been running for six years.
