The value of Italy’s leathergoods exports continues to grow

13/02/2019
A report released by Italian leathergoods association Assopellettieri (formerly known as Aimpes) has shown that the country’s leathergoods sector exported products worth almost €6.8 billion in the first 10 months of 2018, an increase of 10.3% compared to the same period of the previous year.

This follows on from the strong performance of 2017, when the value of exports increased 13.2% year-on-year and set a new full-year record.

The news was less positive when considering leathergoods exports in terms of volume. During the first 10 months of 2018, the volume of exports dropped 5.7%. Assopellettieri pointed out, however, that this still represents the second best result this decade, behind the record of 2017.

The average price per kilogramme increased 17% to more than €134, which Assopellettieri said is a sign of “the undisputed quality of Made in Italy craftsmanship”.

The European Union remains the most important export market for Italian leathergoods. Exports to EU countries increased 7% year-on-year during the first ten months of 2018, although the volume fell 13%. Exports increased in value to Switzerland (+23.4%), France (+9.1%) the UK (+12.7%) and Germany (+11.7%).

Outside of the EU, there was good performance from Asia, where growth in South Korea (+19.3% in value) and China (+21.3%) offset negative performance in Hong Kong (-2.1%) and Japan (-2.3%).

Exports to the US increased 5.7% in value and 17.7% in volume.

In terms of product categories, bags led the way, making up 61.9% of total leathergoods exports during the first 10 months of 2018. Small leathergoods came in second with 17.8% of the total, followed by belts (6.7%) and suitcases and travel accessories (6.5%).
