20/09/2018
During the first five months of the year, exports of leathergoods increased 10.7% in value compared to the same period of 2017. In total, they were worth more than €3.3 billion. This came despite a 1.2% fall in the volume of exports.
The average price per kilogramme increased 12.1% year on year to over €130, which Assopellettieri said “further confirmed the recognition by international buyers of the excellence of ‘Made in Italy’ products”.
Bags was the most significant category of leathergoods, making up 62.3% of total exports in terms of value. This was followed by small leathergoods (17.6%), belts (6.6%) and suitcases and travel accessories (6.2%).
With regards to the destination of Italy’s leathergoods exports, the top five countries were Switzerland, France, Hong Kong, the US and South Korea.
Assopellettieri’s change of name was approved at its annual general meeting in May.
In its previous guise, the organisation was a founding member of Confindustria Moda, the new federation of Italian fashion, textile and accessory companies, which was launched in April 2017. It also includes footwear manufacturers’ association Assocalzaturifici, AIP (the Italian Fur Association), and Federorafi (the Italian Federation of Goldsmiths and Silversmiths).
