Sustainability is top of the agenda at Mipel

More than 350 brands are exhibiting, showing products including bags, luggage, small leathergoods, wallets and belts. There are around 50 first-time exhibitors.
This year, the organiser, Italian leathergoods manufacturers’ association Assopellettieri (formerly known as Aimpes) has chosen to put the spotlight on sustainability. It is examining this important topic from three perspectives: environmental, social and labour.
“Environmental awareness is the cornerstone of projects and initiatives that Mipel proposes for this edition, including also creative solutions,” Assopellettieri said ahead of the exhibition.
Among the way it is showcasing the theme of sustainability is by displaying works by Italian artist Enrica Borghi, who gives a second life to materials that have been discarded. These include items such as bottle tops, plastic bags and safety pins. Her work was displayed throughout the exhibition.
February’s Mipel also offered its support to a workshop project organised by the “Il Girasole” social cooperative group in Florence. Known as “LeaTher’s Work”, it aims to help those in need while also promoting social integration.
Finally, the exhibition gave a platform to Water with a Mission (WAMI), a start-up whose goal is to end the global water problem. Each WAMI bottle sold helps finance a water development project in a village with no access to water. The company had a stand at Mipel.
