Japanese carmaker Nissan has announced it has invested $170 million to upgrade its US assembly plants in preparation for manufacturing of its new sedan, the 2019 Nissan Altima.

Production of the Altima will begin on August 23 at Nissan’s plant in Smyrna, Tennessee. This facility has produced nearly 4.6 million Altima vehicles since June 1992, according to Nissan. It employs 8,400 people.

"Nissan's continued investment in our manufacturing facilities underpins our commitment to building top-quality vehicles in the US, as well as our valued workforce and the communities where we do business," said Heath Holtz, senior vice president for manufacturing, supply chain management and purchasing at Nissan North America.
