Renault-Nissan to take shared driverless electric car project forward

Automotive group Renault-Nissan and Transdev, a developer of autonomous vehicle projects, are to work together to explore ways of setting up fleets of on-demand electric driverless vehicles for the public to use.

The system they will set up will include ways for the public to book cars and ways for operators to operate self-driving car fleets. Renaul-Nissan said the idea is in keeping with its vision of “a zero-emission, zero-fatalities society”.

Initially, the partners will run field tests in Saclay, a town to the south-west of Paris with no train or metro service. This pilot project will use Renault’s ZOE electric vehicles.

Renault-Nissan told World Leather that it had not yet developed specific ideas for the interiors of the cars it will use in this project. Industry commentators have said using these vehicles as a shared public resource should make leather an attractive option for automotive companies.
