Skills development to aid recovery of Zimbabwean leather industry

In comments to local media, LIZ chairperson, Cornelio Sunduza, said there was an urgent need for human resources improvement and skills development if Zimbabwe’s leather industry is to make a full recovery.
He added that the organisation is already in discussions with financial institutions to secure funding. This would be used to buy computer-assisted equipment, upgrade existing infrastructure and set up a pilot tannery.
"We want to train tanneries, boost up production processes so that they can take up the leather from the tanneries and improve product development and designing,” Mr Sunduza explained.
LIZ is in the process of re-launching itself after a few years of financial difficulties. It expects to take on around 35 students per semester, with the new design studio set to form part of their training. The organisation is also launching a website and has started to advertise beyond Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s capital city.
