Expert help for Zimbabwe’s leather sector

The project would be coordinated alongside Netherlands-based PUM, an organisation consisting of experts which assist in the development of small and medium-sized enterprises in developing countries.
The two groups began working together in 2016. Since then, over 50 experts have visited Zimbabwe to promote best practise in the agriculture and manufacturing sectors.
The latest expert to make a trip to the country was Hans Akkerman, PUM’s sector coordinator for leather and textiles.
During his visit, local media reported that he had remarked about the improvements made by the Zimbabwean leather sector in efficiency and quality.
He stressed, however, that more needs to be done, particularly in terms of developing the systems for storing hides and for transporting them to tanneries. He also urged the implementation of a grading system for hides, which he said would incentivise breeders to practice good animal husbandry.
