Call for investment in Zimbabwe’s leather sector

02/03/2018
The chairman of Zimbabwe’s National Leather Working Group (NLWG), Jacob Nyathi, has called for increased investment to strengthen the countries leather value chain and to encourage export-oriented growth.

Speaking to local media, Mr Nyathi said the government should focus on supporting the growth of the leather industry so it can have an impact on both the domestic and overseas market.

"The domestic market share and exports orientation in the sector is low. There is a complete lack of sector development in terms of infrastructure, skills, institutional investment in design innovation, research, and development," he added.

He also insisted that investment in the beef sector would in turn improve the Zimbabwean leather sector.

Another area he highlighted as in need of improvement was the quality of raw hides, which he said could be improved by better education and training for farmers in animal slaughter and hide preservation.
