Burberry must wait until July for new CEO

The incoming chief executive of UK-based luxury brand Burberry, Marco Gobbetti, will not assume his position until July, the company has confirmed.

Burberry announced in July 2016 that Mr Gobbetti, formerly chief executive of French brand Céline, would be taking over as CEO from Christopher Bailey as part of a “strategic review” of its business following disappointing results in the 2015/16 financial year. Mr Bailey will move to the role of chief creative officer and president in the new set-up.

Although unable to assume the position of CEO until July due to contractual obligations with his previous employer, Mr Gobbetti will arrive at Burberry on January 27, initially serving as executive chairman for the brand’s Asia-Pacific and Middle East division. Burberry hopes this will allow him to get to know the business before stepping up to his primary role in July.
