US beef exports down in April

Exports of US beef in April fell below the volumes recorded in the same period last year, according to statistics released by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The data compiled by the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) showed that beef exports for the month totalled 190 metric tonnes (mt) in April, down 4% from a year ago. The value of exports fell 13% to $481 million. For the first four months of 2016, exports of beef were consistent with the pace of 2015 in volume but fell in value.

Mexico was the leading volume destination for US beef in April with exports of 20,534 mt, an increase of 19% on last year. Value increased 11% to $89.5 million. Exports to Central and South America were strong, led by larger volumes to Chile, Colombia, Panama and Honduras. Volume increased 19% to 3,035 mt and value jumped 33% to $14.4 million.

Beef exports to most Asian markets decreased with Hong Kong seeing the sharpest drop. Volume fell 39% to 6,487 mt and value dipped 48% to $39.9 million. There was better news from Taiwan, where exports in April were up 27% in volume to 3,726 mt and 6% in value to $25.3 million.
