Beef not on agenda at EU-Mercosur talks

Discussions about beef will not be included in the current trade deal negotiations between the EU and Mercosur, according to EU Agriculture Commissioner Phil Hogan.

Mr Hogan made the statement at a meeting with Welsh farming Union NFU Cymru in Glamorgan. He said that South American beef is ‘off the menu’ and would not feature in the ongoing talks with the trade block.

The announcement will go some way to ease the concerns of EU beef farmers who feared that the negotiations would see lower tariffs imposed on some beef products coming from South America.

“The announcement from Commissioner Hogan is reassuring for the Welsh beef sector. NFU Cymru has had major concerns with regard to the impact that nearly 80,000 tonnes of additional non-tariff beef would have on beef prices across the EU,” said Stephen James, NFU Cymru president.
