President feels Uruguayan automotive tanners’ EU pain

Afterwards, he criticised the European Union for failing to finalise a free trade agreement with the Mercosur economic bloc, as a result of which automotive leather producers in Uruguay face a trickier task than they might in shipping their output to European automotive seating factories.
“With all its attention focused on Ukraine, the European Union isn’t really thinking about what’s happening here,” the president said.
He pointed out that, with 4,000 people now working in automotive tanneries in Uruguay and automotive leather exports bringing in $400 million a year in export revenues, the sector represents a strong growth opportunity for the Uruguayan economy.
