Statistics released by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) showed that US beef exports increased 12% year-on-year in volume to 99,451 metric tonnes in May. The data, compiled by the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) showed a 4% drop in export value compared to May 2015 but it still represented the highest figure since July last year.

Japan led the way with regards to export destinations with a 29% in volume making for the best performance since September 2015. The value of exports to Japan climbed 22%. There was also a significant increase in exports to South Korea in terms of volume (+59), the largest figure in over five years.

“With domestic beef supplies being very tight in both Japan and Korea, our spring marketing campaigns have focused on presenting US beef as a high-quality, reasonably priced alternative,” said USMEF President and CEO Philip Seng. He added that training and support programmes with Japanese retailers, which included discussing new merchandising techniques and cooking styles, allowed US beef to displace domestic beef and foreign competition in many of the country’s supermarket chains.

Beef exports to Mexico also picked up in May, increasing 33% in volume and 13% in value when compared to the same period of 2015. Mr Seng said Mexico is a “challenging” market for US beef exports but that it has been tackled by “promoting economically priced alternative cuts”.
