June a strong month for US beef exports

09/08/2016
US beef exports were valued at $545.4 million in June, a 5% drop on the same period of last year but the best month so far in 2016. The volume of beef exports was up 2% to 98,920 tonnes. For the first half of the year, volume was up 3% to 541,547 tonnes, but value fell 10% to $2.91 billion.

Japan led the way, importing the largest volume of US beef in nearly two years. In June, US beef exports to Japan rose 29% in volume to 25,836 tonnes. Data from the first half of 2016 showed that US beef has increased its share in the Japanese market to 38.5%.

In spite of this strong performance, Philip Seng, US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) president and CEO said:  “US beef faces a significant tariff rate disadvantage in Japan, and this gap will grow larger unless and until the Trans-Pacific Partnership is ratified.”

Beef exports to Mexico also remained strong in June, increasing 14% in volume to 20,021 tonnes. Volume was down 13% to $76.2 million.

There was also a considerable increase in US beef exports to the ASEAN region. Due to strong growth in the Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam, exports to the region were up 113% in volume and 57% in value in June.
