Poland leads EU beef exports

15/06/2016
Data from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), which monitors the beef and lamb industry in the UK, shows that Poland was the European Union’s largest exporter of beef between January and March 2016.

In the first quarter of the year, Poland exported approximately 8,320 tonnes of beef to markets outside of the EU, 20% of the total beef shipped outside the zone. Germany followed closely behind with an 18% share but only 41,600 tonnes of the beef produced in the EU was shipped to outside markets. Spain and the Netherlands each made up 10% of the total.

According to the AHDB, five markets accounted for 50% of the volume of beef exported from the EU in the first quarter of 2016. These countries were Bosnia and Herzegovina, Norway, Switzerland, Hong Kong and Israel. Growth was especially strong to Israel, where shipments were up 250% during the quarter, although the US is a smaller market than some industry figures had predicted. EU beef exports to China more than doubled, the AHDB data showed. 510 tonnes of EU beef were shipped to the country during the first three months of the year.
