EU countries targeting Japan for beef

10/06/2016
Various EU countries are awaiting approval from Japan to increase its imports of European beef, a European Commission spokeswomen said. Austria, Belgium, Germany, Spain, the UK, Lithuania and Croatia are interested in entering into a bilateral trade relationship with Japan and have outstanding applications pending with the Asian country, according to Minna Jalili.

She added that it was unclear how long it would take for Japan to grant market access to the countries. The applications are currently being processed by Japanese government and health officials.

In May 2016 Italy joined countries including France, Ireland and the Netherlands, as states that have the necessary permits to export beef to Japan. This came after health officials successfully convinced Japan that its livestock business didn’t contain bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).
