Emerging markets for UK beef in Asia
30/06/2016
Speaking at AHDB’s meat export conference on June 29, Mr Garnier said that strong diplomatic relations between the UK and China, as well as rising demand in India, Indonesia, South Korea and Malaysia, means there are several emerging markets for the UK beef. Mr Garnier said that Asia represents “tremendous scope for development” at a time of trade uncertainty with the UK needing to negotiate a new trade policy with the EU.
China is currently the largest export market for UK meat. In 2015, the value of exports rose to £43 million, with a volume of approximately 54,500 tonnes. Hong Kong imported £19.7 million worth of UK meat last year, a volume of 22,200 tonnes.
Mr Garnier said that the situation in China is “unprecedented” and that the UK meat industry is “making good money from this market”.
