Minister claims progress made on Irish beef entering China

Ireland’s Minister for Agriculture, Michael Creed, says he held positive discussions regarding the entry of Irish beef into China during a recent trade mission in Asia.

Mr Creed met with Zhi Shuping, a senior minister in charge of China’s Quarantine Inspection Service (AQSIQ), with whom he had a “positive and constructive” conversation. Mr Zhi is a key figure in the negotiations to gain access to the Chinese market for Irish agri-food exports.

The ministers discussed a range of issues, included continued collaboration in food safety, research and innovation, as well as Ireland’s application for access to China’s beef market.

Mr Creed said he was encouraged by his counterpart’s assurance that they would expedite their consideration of Ireland’s application, but cautioned that the approval process is complex. Nevertheless, he said he was satisfied that this represents “really positive progress”, describing it as “another milestone on a journey to open opportunities for Irish beef exporters to the lucrative Chinese beef market”.
