Tesla rejects PETA member’s request for only ‘vegan leather’

12/06/2015
A People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) member who is also a shareholder of electric carmaker Tesla used its annual meeting to request the company stop using leather and instead change to “more environmentally friendly” ‘vegan leather’.

In a manner fairly typical of PETA, she incorrectly suggested the plastic-based alternatives are better for the environment, even though they are mainly made from non-renewable resources, and claimed most animals in the meat industry suffer.

The board unanimously rejected her suggestion.

Peta often uses inaccuracies and untruths and is, unfortunately, given a platform by a lot of mainstream media, including the Indian site of Huffington Post, which Leatherbiz contacted on June 8.

Our sister site, Nothing to Hide has been established to correct some of these wrongs, and is freely available as a resource to journalists and the wider industry. Leading experts across the globe tackle issues including waste, chrome, meat and deforestation.
