Almost 30 effluent treatment plants are being built to make Xinji’s leather industry more sustainable, according to a report on the China Leather Industry Association’s website.

Twenty-eight wastewater treatment plants are under construction, so that the large-scale tanneries in the area can meet new water and pollution standards, according to reports.

Xinji, a city in Hebei province, has 108 tanneries in the biggest leather-making industrial zone in China.

A large number of tanneries have been closed in Hebei since the start of this year, part of a government crackdown on pollution.
