China could increase environmental clean-up measures

He made the remarks at a meeting on air pollution control in Beijing and its surrounding areas, encompassing Tianjin Municipality and Hebei Province, where the government has forced the closure of an undisclosed number of tanneries since the start of this year.
He said this is a "long-term, arduous and complicated" mission and people must be “clearly aware” of the situation and “retain the determination to solve it”.
He suggested using the industrial standards and environmental policies for Beijing and Hebei as a foundation for wider industrial upgrades, and suggested an air quality-oriented award and punishment system for officials.
China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection published a survey this week which said 60% of Chinese want the government to give priority to environmental protection. In Beijing, Harbin, Hefei, Nanjing, Shanghai, Wuhan and Zhengzhou, 60% of the 1,000 surveyed thought the smog in their cities was serious.
