China steps up water pollution monitoring

Although the inspections will cover multiple industries, tanneries were hard hit when the government introduced anti-air and water pollution measures at the start of last year, with hundreds being forcibly closed, particularly in Hebei province.
The first wastewater standards aimed at the leather industry were introduced in March 2014.
Teams of inspectors will inspect “protection of water resources, water pollutant discharge, the legal system for permitting pollutants and pollution prevention measures for major rivers”.
