Xinji tanneries are open for business again

07/01/2015
Twenty-three tanneries in Xinji in China’s Hebei province have recommenced production, the China Leather Industry Association has reported.

Xinji had more than 30 tanneries in 2012, when the local authorities ordered that they all cease production owing to environmental concerns. At that time, Xinji tanneries were processing a collective total of around 4 million hides a year and employed more than 2,000 people.

For the city authorities, the main concern was that an effluent treatment plant that had been processing waste from Xinji tanneries since 1998 was no longer able to cope and it ordered production to stop pending the construction of a new facility. Work started on the new effluent treatment plant in 2013 and by the end of 2014, the new facility was up and running.
