Hebei tanneries given clean-up deadline

17/07/2015
Tanneries in the Chinese province of Hebei, which was the worst affected by the government crackdown on polluting industries during 2014, have been given a deadline for improvement work.

The Environmental Protection Bureau of Hebei has said they have until October 31 to finish any remaining renovations, and if they do not meet required standards, they will be forced to close.

It is unclear how many tanneries have closed since 2014, but it has been estimated to be in the hundreds, and the production gap has had a knock-on effect along the leather supply chain. The skins market has been hit particularly hard, as the area was home to many sheepskin tanneries.
