China: ‘Polluting’ tanneries forced to close

17/01/2014
Tanneries are among 8,300 companies that were forced to close in the Chinese region of Hebei last year after they were deemed to be polluting the atmosphere.

Chinese state media agency Xinhua reported that Hebei is home to seven of the country's 10 most polluted cities and faces an enormous challenge with its air pollution.

Some tanneries as well as corn refiners and factories are moving to more remote countryside and some are even operating within the disguise of corn fields, Yang Zhiming, deputy director of the Hebei provincial bureau of environmental protection, told a press briefing.

The agency has recruited 10,300 volunteers to monitor pollution sources and is offering cash rewards to whistleblowers.

Last summer, the Chinese government warned that tanneries were on its pollution watch lists and should expect increasing inspections.
