Italy: Links between tanneries and colleges pay off

A close relationship between Italian tanners and the Cattaneo Institute of San Miniato is bearing fruit, with numerous young graduates possessing the necessary skills and knowledge to enter the sector, said Ezio Castellani, president of Santa Croce-based tanners association Assoconciatori.

He described the collaboration as a “success for the entire district” and added that while other manufacturing sectors are struggling to find suitable labour, the tanners can draw on a pool of skilful graduates.

He said: “As tanners, over the last 20 years we have consolidated a fruitful collaboration with the Cattaneo Institute to explain what the needs of our companies and our market are, thus helping the school to define targeted training courses, such as those in the chemical tanning field. The collaboration continues, a sign of a synergy between its players, which is also the strength of the district."

The Tanners Association, a non-profit company, was founded in Santa Croce sull'Arno in 1976. It has around 150 tanneries as members.
