Rino Mastrotto to chair UNIC

28/06/2011
Italy’s National Union for the Tanning Industry (UNIC) held its general assembly in Milan on 23 June, during which a new executive board was elected and a new chairman appointed for the 2011-2013 term.

Arzignano-based tanner Rino Mastrotto was elected as the organisation’s new chairman.

Mr Mastrotto began his career 50 years ago in his family’s business, Conceria Fratelli Mastrotto. In 1964, he took up the role of managing raw material supply for the company. Then, in 1969, when his father, Arciso Mastrotto, founded a new specialist calfskin tannery, Basmar, Rino Mastrotto took up a board position.

From 1985 to 1989, he led a series of acquisitions of businesses including Pomari, San Marco, Calbe and Brusarosco, which combined to make the Mastrotto Group one of the largest tanning groups in the world.

At the end of 1998, he chose to merge some of the most important companies he led into a single entity, the Rino Mastrotto Group. These companies were Basmar, Pomari, Calbe, Brusarosco and Galassia. Today, the organisation has 1,100 employees and generates
consolidated sales of EUR 250 million.

Over the last decade, Rino Mastrotto has also led a series of international transactions that have resulted in the acquisitions of the
tanneries Bermas Maracanau in Brazil, the Rino Mastrotto Group Vietnam, and Elmo Leather in Sweden, in addition to setting up a number of sales offices in China, Paraguay, Australia and Hong Kong. The group has come through the most recent global economic crisis without resorting to either layoffs or terminations of employment.

He has been named a Commendatore of the Republic of Italy and honorary consul of Paraguay. He holds various positions
within service organisations for the tanning industry, in career training centres, and in many charitable organisations.

Rino Mastrotto joined the UNIC board in 1992 and was appointed deputy chairman in 1999, a post which he held until this new election.

Assisting the new chairman for the next two years will be four deputy chairmen: outgoing chairman Graziano Balducci (from Antiba, Santa Croce sull’Arno); Franco Donati (Lufran, Santa Croce sull’Arno); Giuseppe Walter Peretti (Conceria Cristina, Montebello Vicentino); and Gianni Russo (Russo di Casandrino, Casandrino).

The new Executive Board will include the following: Graziano Balducci (Antiba), Massimo Banti (Alba); Ezio Castellani (Sciarada); Sergio Cerrini (Eurofur); Giancarlo Dani (Dani Group); Michele De Maio (DMD Solofra); Franco Donati (Lufran – D & Co.
Consorzio); Bernardo Finco (Adelaide); Alessandro Francioni (Sanlorenzo); Attilio Gronchi (Samanta); Alessandro Iliprandi (Bonaudo); Felice Maffei (Carisma); Rino Mastrotto (Rino Mastrotto Group); Fabrizio Nuti (Nuti Ivo); Giuseppe Walter Peretti (Cristina); Piero Rosati (Incas); Gianni Russo (Russo di Casandrino); Enrico Tabellini (M.E.S.I.); Sabatino Vignola (Vignola Nobile); and Giuseppe Volpi (Volpi Concerie).

This newly appointed board has said promotion, research, training and the environment are to be the priorities on their agenda.
